TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
The Savannah College of Art and Design Sculpture Student Work
βYes, Artists are natural problem solvers, but it is passion that drives the work to fruition.β
"Creativity is the drive to communicate ideas, which through painstaking decision-making becomes a form of language. Regardless of the medium, be it music, film, sculpture or dance, the application of choices and their success is based on the ability to convey goals clearly and fearlessly. In my 28 years of teaching and 12 years as a Department Chair I have found myself defining my role on some levels as a creativity coach, one who examines individuality, conveys and encourages growth and clearly and constructively identifies strengths and weaknesses. It is imperative that young artists understand the responsibilities of being visual communicators and the power that lies within those possibilities. I find the creative process similar to science in that a discovery process must take place where experimentation and expansion can occur. The ability to identify intent and heighten the awareness of what is possible while gaining tools to move forward creatively and appropriately is a lifelong skill.
My personal commitment to this process has enabled me to be open and allowed for the teaching process to become an art form in and of itself. As a Chair, as well as Professor, it is my objective to be of service, to facilitate, engage and encourage all members of the artistic community to grow to their fullest potential. By providing guidance, support, honesty and encouragement my goal is to help students move forward in the progressive magical experience of making and to go beyond not only being just good artists but ones who embrace their audience and comprehend their role in society."
